Camorim is a neighborhood located in the West Zone (Zona Oeste) of Rio, surrounding bairros (neighborhoods) are jacarepaguá to the east, recreio dos bandeirantes, vargem pequena and vargem grande to the west, and barra da tijuca to the south and east.

The name of this district originates from the indigenous Tupi people, who resided in the region prior to Portuguese colonization, in whose language the word 'camury' is the combination of 'ca', meaning 'kill', and 'mury', meaning 'mosquitoes' or 'flies', in other words 'kills with mosquitoes'. It was adapted by the Portuguese into its current form and also denominates the district's main thoroughfare.

At one time, the land now occupied by the district was owned by a farmer named Gonçalo Correia de Sá, who was gifted the land by his father at the end of the 16th Century - The Tupi people referred to the district at this time as Pirapitingui, which translates as 'white fish scales'. arrow-back      arrow-forward
