deodoro is located in the zona oeste (west zone) of rio de janeiro and is heavily occupied by a military population - its boundaries include the townships of vila militar, campo dos afonsos, marechal hermes, guadalupe and ricardo de albuquerque. home to over 60,000 military servicemen and women, deodoro has developed into a prominent district in its area.

deodoro was chosen to be one of four prominent neighborhoods in the city of rio to host the 2016 summer olympic games alongside barra, copacabana and maracanã - those districts were prepared to host over 10,500 athletes participating in the various sporting competitions, with seven events being held in deodoro, including fencing, shooting, canoeing, horse riding, bmx and mountain biking as well as the penthalon held in the outdoor gaming area parque radical (radical park).
