located in the north zone of rio de janeiro, guadalupe is surrounded by the neighborhoods of deodoro, marechal hermes, honório gurgel, barros filho, costa barros, pavuna, anchieta and ricardo de albuquerque.

it was named after the patron saint of south america, our lady of guadalupe. the suggestion came from darcy vargas, the wife of the brazilian dictator getúlio vargas.

while he was in government, between 1930 to 1945, vargas ordered the construction of several residences along avenida brasil - brazil avenue, a project known as popular housing. the project is surrounded by the wider urban sprawl of the city, with brazil avenue cutting through the middle of it. such a location made guadalupe a very lively and economically active neighborhood.
