at a glance

named after the 'enchanted river faria', which flows through the region, encantado is a district located in the north zone of rio de janeiro. it is surrounded by the northern cities of piedade, abolição, água santa and engenho de dentro. this district was founded in 1892 with the establishment of the central railroad of brazil.

the waters of rio faria are said to be magical and have the ability to 'swallow' those who travel by it. according to legend, thome ferri, chief of the indigenous mana tribe, spotted a white figure, without form, near the mouth of the creek. he then observed the figure throwing himself into the deep waters of the river, disapearing as if by magic.
