at a glance

'engenho da rainha' or 'mill of the queen' is a neighborhood in the administrative region of inhaúma. it is located in the north zone of rio de janeiro and is bordered by the neighborhoods of pilares, inhaúma, complexo do alemão and tomás coelho.

the name of this region originates from the time of colonization when the portuguese monarch, dom joão, vi occupied the area. his wife, queen dona carlota joaquina became known as the 'farm queen,' because she purchased a house stationed on a quarter mile plot of land.

this marsh area later became an important farmland area for the economy of rio de janeiro. african slaves played an integral part in the production of goods, during dom joão reign, african slaves would escape from engenho da rainha and hid in the foothills of the mountain of mercy to avoid forced labor. arrow-back      arrow-forward
