at a glance

engenho de dentro is located within the méier administrative region in the north zone of rio de janeiro. it was originally a sugar mill town owned by a jesuit community and is now a flourishing district.

engenho de dentro shares borders with the neigborhoods of água santa, encantado, abolição, pilares, inhaúma, cachambi and five smaller neighborhoods within the méier region. in fact, it is considered to be part of 'big méier', a region that forms an important commercial center of the state of rio.

the district is also home to the popular and historic rio stadium (also known as the joão havelange olympic stadium) which hosted the pan american games in 2007. a popular tourist attraction, the museu de imagens do inconsciente (the museum of images of the unconscious) is also located within the district.
