engenho novo is a neighborhood located in the north zone of rio de janeiro. it is one of the neighborhoods which make up 'grande méier', a large commerce area situated in the méier administrative region and surrounded by encantado, engenho de dentro,  jacaré,  lins de vasconcelos.

engenho novo was originally a mill town, whose name means 'new mill,' and was owned by a jesuit community when it was first settled in 1707.

the construction of the railway of brazil in 1892, under the reign of dom pedro ii, allowed for the then farmland and marsh areas of the new mill to be developed into a neighborhood.
