at a glance

the district of engenho da rainha was officially founded during the construction of the railroad of brazil, in 1892. the landmark metrô station, engenho da rainha is located along the popular street, pastor martin luther king jr. (formerly known as avenida automovel clube) - it was built in 1991.

engenho da rainha is represented by the samba school, g. r. e. s. academicos do engenho da rainha, in rio's famous annual carnival festival.

the school celebrates african history and the abolition of slavery in engenho da rainha  through performance and song. lyrics such as, 'today my voice comes chanting, a merry heart overflow, my school united in one corner, dressed in red and white, recalls the popular songbook, blacks and whites in harmony' are representative of this.
