at a glance

pre-colonization the encantado region was inhabited by numerous indigenous tribes, at this time the area was only known by the legend that surrounded it - the name 'encantado' did not appear in writing until a portuguese bishop, by the name of manoel joaquim da silva, claimed ownership of the land in 1856.

the rail line which runs through the district is called the linha amarela - yellow line expressway, and since 1997, it is connecting encantado with the district of tijuca.

the major streets running parallel to the railway, were named by two doctors, who in the early nineteenth century were reportedly 'delighted' by the region: dr. domingos freire and dr. clarimundo de melo gave - these two important avenues wind from encantado and through its surrounding boroughs. arrow-back      arrow-forward
