at a glance

inhoaíba is a bairro (neighborhood) situated in the (zona oeste) west region of rio de janeiro, nestled between the ample region covered by the campo grande neighborhood, in the east, and the more compact bulk of the cosmos neighborhood. it is also close to the guaratiba neighborhood, which is to the south, just beyond the inhoaíba ridge.

although there are several theories concerning the origin of its name, it is usually accepted that it derived from a corruption of the indigenous words for field and bad, 'nhu' and 'ahyba' respectively, thus meaning 'bad field'.

another theory says that it concerns the landlord locally known as mister aníbal, 'senhor aníbal' in portuguese. as the illiterate workers and slaves tended to refer to him as 'nhô aníbal' in their jargon the expression ended up being corrupted into its current form 'inhoaíba'. arrow-back      arrow-forward
