at a glance

grumari is a neighborhood dominated by the municipal natural park of grumari, a vast region of atlantic rainforest in the werst region of rio de janeiro, between the neighborhoods of barra de guaratiba and recreio dos bandeirantes. the name of the neighborhood comes from two indigenous words, 'curu' and 'mari', respectively 'loose stones' and 'water source'. grumari is also the name for a local species of tree.

for much of its existence this area remained very concealed and access was basically impossible. this changed with the construction of the guanabra state avenue, which linked it to the recreio dos bandeirantes.  another important access lane is the grumari road, which, in its turn, connects the region to the barra de guaratiba. this road also contains a famous restaurant in the neighborhood, the grumari point. arrow-back      arrow-forward
