At this time there was a seaside ranch named Fazenda da Pedra, or 'Stone's Farm', in the region. This farm gave rise to the name of the neighborhood, and translates as 'Guaratiba's Stone'. However, the area was only established as a neighborhood in its own right as recent as 1981.
Sources suggest that Pedra de Guaratiba was an important exporter of Gold to Minas Gerais in the 17th Century.

When sugar production began to drop, coffee plantations took its place, and the Fazendo do Engenho Novo, or the 'Engenho Novo Farm', was the first farm in Rio to use modern imported machinery for coffee cultivation.
In more recent history, the region was known for its supply of fish, and people would visit from around the State to eat at the quality seafood restaurants, many of which still exist today.

Pedra de Guaratiba remains a largely rural region, boasting wonderful views of the surrounding natural wilderness. To the north is the heavily forested Morro de Silvério, or 'Silvério Hill', and to the south is the Reserva Biológica Estadual de Guaratiba, or the 'State Biological Reserve of Guaratiba', renowned worldwide for its extensive range of exotic birds.
