In 1889, the neighborhoods of Zona Sul, such as Catete, Flamengo, Laranjeiras and Botafogo started to receive water from Rio D'Ouro through a pipeline coming from the Pedregulho Reservoir to Praça José de Alencar, in Largo do Machado, soon extended to the Morro da Viúva Reservoir.
