The research work was undertaken in the neighborhood of Vargem Grande in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and an examination of the geology, geomorphology, physical peculiarities of the area and the configuration of the population were essential for an understanding of the form and character of the site.

The socio-environmental problems identified in this study are related and proven through the instruments which enabled the research. The use of news was of fundamental importance to understanding local realities. Geography introduces and uses in its studies concepts and data produced by other disciplines, and in this way, the subject is proven to be both interdisciplinary and dynamic.
