considered one of the most important 'modernist' musicians in brazil, his birthday was declared the national day of classical music (Dia Nacional da Música Clássica). on this day, a variety of special events and concerts are held across rio de janeiro. on display are some of lobos original musical instruments, which revolutionized brazilian folk music. the collection also includes score sheets, letters, documents, monographs, records, tapes, posters, photographs, movies and other personal items belonging to the composer. since 1961, every november the villa-lobos festival promotes Brazilian musicians and composers with a variety of events. both classical and popular music are performed, with particular attention to Brazilian culture.
