at a glance

there works were led by roberto burle marx, who maintained the classic design but enlarged the curves in the black and white patterns so characteristic of the portuguese boardwalk work - this resulted in a total coverage area of 121 hectares.

declared national heritage by the national state institute of patrimony in 1991 (instituto do patrimônio histórico e artístico nacional - iphan), the structure is nowadays maintained by a dedicated group of forty pavers, with over 200,000 reals being spent every year in replacement stones alone.

being quite robust, the boardwalk also allows for great spectacles to be held over it, like the famous new year festivities which bring millions of people to copacabana every year. the night of the fireworks on copacabana is the night everyone has been waiting for - building up for many days and nights of pre-celebrations and partying around town.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
