at a glance

from then onwards there were a number of landmark events that brought copacabana into prominence, most notably the building of the copacabana palace hotel, in 1923.

built between 1919 and 1923, the copacabana palace was the very fist luxury hotel in rio de janeiro, originally aimed at receiving the crowds that were anticipated for the great exposition in occasion of the centenary of the independence of brazil of 1922 - due to delays in the shipping of materials and a high tide that damaged the hotel inauguration only happened one year after the centenary.

while the managers of the copacabana palace were worrying about the delays, on the other end of copacabana beach, in the forte de copacabana, a very different sets of problems were being faced - in the summer of 1922, the republican government of brazil was bracing for a revolt - to thwart the rebellious plan, the government closed many of its army bases. arrow-back      arrow-forward
