at a glance

it was disbanded again in 1895 and left to abandonment - but at the end of the 19th century during the government of marechal floriano peixoto, the fort became part of a general effort to modernize and strengthen the Brazilian armed forces.

nicknamed the 'the iron marshal' peixoto found it necessary to rule with strength due to the many problems and opposition to his brief government - The investment on the fort was enormous and its electrical generator was so powerful at the time that it fed electricity to entire copacabana area.

the early 20th century saw works of modernization due to concerns over how a large scale conflict would affect the country - the care and importance that was placed into its construction can be judged by its still standing thick walls.

in the summer of 1922, the republican government of brazil was bracing for a revolt, not by the citizens, but by the army - thus, to thwart the rebellious plan, the government closed many of its army bases, but the forte de copacabana was already occupied by the revolutionaries, and the government's ultimatum to these rebels was to either surrender or suffer the consequences of death.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
