The Copacabana moralization and sanitation campaign was responded to immediately by Tribuna da Imprensa, through the publication of police corruption allegations and articles purporting the involvement of the Bureau of Customs and Public Entertainment with illegal practices.

The strategy adopted by Carlos Lacerda, founder and owner of Tribuna da Imprensa and staunch opponent of president Getúlio Vargas, was to present stories that would link the government, and particularly the president, Getúlio Vargas, with the expansion of corruption.

Presented by the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, the study Genealogia de Copacabana (The genealogy of Copacabana) presents how Copacabana was born during the proliferation of the ideals of genetics during the beginning of the 20th Century, when youth, health and beauty transformed the prevailing nucleus of modern values.
