the entrance to the corcovado railway is in cosme velho, this is the train that climbs to 710 meters to the summit of the corcovado, where the statue of christ the redeemer is located, symbol of the city and one of the seven new wonders of the world with stunning panoramic views.

one of the major roads in cosme velho, rua cosme velho, continues into the neighboring district laranjeiras, where it becomes rua das laranjeiras - historically these two neighborhoods are linked and they share similar topography and urban settings.

Largo do Boticário, or 'Apothecary Square', is a small alleyway containing eight houses of neo-classical architectural design - The houses were first built in 1879 with materials recovered from the demolition of other buildings in the center of town, and offer visitors a charming insight into architecture and habitation of the past.

The 'Boticário' name honors an early resident called major Joaquim da Silva Souto, who was a retired military man known for preparing ointments and syrups for a small apothecary. arrow-back      arrow-forward
