the lagoa rodrigo de freitas in rio de janeiro also gives its name to the neighborhood formed by the edges of the surrounding land - besides being a place of noble abode with beautiful mountain views, it has a large park surrounding its banks, which became a large area of outdoor recreation scene in the district.

the natural landscape of jardim botânico neighborhood lends itself to an outdoor sporting culture - the district is home to several sports clubs, including the jockey club of brazil and the brazilian equestrian society, both constitute aspects of a high society.

the most prominent feature of this neighborhood - the jardim botânico itself, was created in 1808 alongside the gun powder factory, by then prince regent of brazil and portugal, dom joão vi, to house and acclimatize the plant species that had been brought to brazil, from europe, and the spices that came from the east indies - it was initially known as 'horto real' ('royal garden').   arrow-back      arrow-forward
