the praia do leme is also the arriving point for the  travessia dos fortes,  a swimming competition set between the forte de copacabana at posto 6 and the forte do leme, located right above leme beach. 

'fortes' means both 'fort' and 'strong,' from this the name of the competition as 'crossing of the strong.'

easily accessible walking along copacabana beach, via public transportation, the closest subway stop to leme is cardeal arcoverde, although it stops about 400 meters away at posto 3. 

walking along or swimming at leme's beach after dark is safe, but generally not recommended, especially due to the strong currents and the low illumination, that would make rescue difficult in case of trouble.
