among such residential areas was itacolomi, and even then the urbanization was mostly sparse and the neighborhood mainly had a rural feel to it, with houses scattered among the lines of trees and some basic infrastructures like schools and soccer fields. in the 1950s, though, the decision was taken to build the antônio jobim international airport, which would take up a wide portion of the island - for the success of this ambitious program, many people were relocated, and many of the colonies that existed at that time disappeared, in fact, itacolomi was for the most part completely destroyed. |
