at a glance

itacolomi is something of an oddity among the 'carioca' neighborhoods - although it was once a relatively large and lively location it no longer exists as a residential area - instead most of the neighborhood was demolished to make space for the construction of the antônio jobim international airport.

in spite of the neighborhood's disappearance it's still fondly remembered by those who lived in it - this location was once an ample area of ranches which belonged to the benedict priests.

the rural nature of the region was similar to the remaining of the governor's island for much of its history - the real occupation of the island by residential areas like those it is now known for would only come much later - by the 1920s, in the region now known as galeão, some colonies of the so-called 'alienated' were created. arrow-back     arrow-forward
