at a glance

The area which would later be called Jardim Palmares, was first built at the end of the 1960s, during a period of great urban expansion in the Paciência Neighborhood, to the west of Rio de Janeiro - The area emerged alongside Avenida Brasil, or 'Brazil Avenue', which is still the main access route to the area.

The project was originally designed to create cheap housing for public servants who were paid low wages, as well as World War Two veterans, known locally as 'Pracinhas'.

The space was further expanded in the following years to house pensioners, which led to the houses being nicknamed Casas Viúvias, or 'Widow Homes', by the populace. In 1970 a neighborhood association was formed where the first regional school was located. arrow-back     arrow-forward
