while dating someone, a simple kiss is also a nice way to show appreciation, and cariocas normally kiss with more ease than americans or europeans - this can often lead visitors to get the wrong idea if they are not familiar with brazilian public displays of affection.

smoking is not allowed in rio's restaurants, other than in designated areas, and many do not allow smoking on outdoor terraces - a 'rio sem fumo' post is usually clearly visible at the bar or near the register, however the presence of ashtrays should be a clear indication of where smoking is permitted.

more information about smoking restrictions in rio de janeiro can be found here - this restriction is vigorously enforced.
