there are three types of extra charges visitors can expect when dining in rio de janeiro.  couvert de mesa, couvert artistico, and of course service. understanding these charges is important to avoid overcharges or embarrassing discussions.

couvert de mesa, or 'aperitivos, is charged by a-la-carte restaurants that bring breads, butters, olives, sauces, pates and similar appetizers to the table, prior to taking any orders.  this couvert should be priced on the menu, and waiters are required to either ask customers if they want these appetizers, and in case they serve them without asking, how much they cost.  if the waiters fail to disclose the price, they can be considered samples free of charge 'amostra grátis.'

couvert artistico is an extra charge added to the bill in case of a live musical performance.  this charge is per person, and it should always be disclosed clearly on the table or on the menu.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
