in 1991 Brazil acknowledged Belarus as a independent nation, and in 1992 the two nations formalized diplomatic ties which have continued up until today - Belarus installed first a general consulate in Rio de Janeiro in 2001, and later in 2010 the first belarus embassy was opened in Brasília, the current capital of Brazil.

in 2010, reinforcing the desire to strengthen bilateral ties, the president of Belarus visited Brazil for the first time accompanied by high government officials to inaugurate the embassy of Belarus in Brasília.
