in December 1991 Brazil acknowledged the independence of Ukraine and just a few months later diplomatic ties were established - in 1993 the Ukrainian embassy was opened in Brasília and in 1995 the Brazilian embassy opened in Kiev.

Since the early 2000s several presidential meetings between the two countries have occurred in order to elevate the relationship to a "strategic partnership" level - ukraine and Brazil cooperate on many technical and scientific initiatives such as the cyclone-4 launch, from the alcantara launch centre in the north of Brazil.
