courses with ramps and advanced equipment made the sport desirable to participate and watch - shortly after this time the bicicross course of barra da tijuca, jacarepaguá and governor's island were created and became sought after bmx practice locations. in 1985 the first Brazilian bmx freestyle competition took place and solidified the sport's popularity for decades to come - nowadays there are more than two thousand federated riders in brazil, even some world champions, with the sport attracting many viewers.  

in 2008 bmx racing was first introduced to the olympics for the first time - this opened the door for a variety of extreme sports to be considered for future games renato rezende was the first male to represent brasil in the sport of bmx during the london olympic games of 2012 - born in rio de janeiro, he has competed in bmx since he was seven years old and has succeeded in several tournaments in his life.

along with renato rezende was squel stein, a female bmx athlete who had suffered a serious accident in 2011 but eventually managed to take part in the female competition in the olympics - because of the difficulties with her injury squel was eliminated early in the games.
