at a glance

the obsession with cycling in carioca culture is easily visible along the many bike paths in the city - rio de janeiro's strong connection with bicycles is no secret and extending this passion to bicycle motocross, bmx, was somewhat inevitable.

the sport has recently been linked to the netherlands around the 1950s - this fact was claimed by historical research that featured publications advertising the activity- during this time dutch children were involved in organized bmx events, where races were constructed with specifically designed dirt tracks, with the first event ever held on queen's day 1956.

bmx gained notoriety in the 1970s, in the middle of the usa motocross craze - kids would imitate motocross racers with their bicycles and eventually bicycle designs started changing to cater to bmx movements.

in 1973 the first BMX magazine publication, called bicycle motocross news, was created - it was introduced to brazil in 1978 by orlando camacho, a cycler from săo paulo - this city played an extremely important role in developing the sport nationwide along with belo horizonte. in the 1978 and 1980 freestyle bmx began to evolve in both the usa and brazil.  arrow-back     arrow-forward
