the airport is named after  alberto santos-dumont, a  brazilian national hero who is considered the father of aviation, also credited by aéro club de france and the fédération aéronautique internationale - fai for building a heavier-than-air aircraft and making the first powered heavier-than-air flight in europe on october 23rd, 1906.
