for instance, the rio d'ouro railroad, otherwise known as the estrada de ferro rio d'ouro, was constructed in 1883 to support the building of rio de janeiro's water supply system.

the train brought workers to and from the outskirts of the city to the center, in addition to carrying supplies that were needed to construct the water system - in 1970, this particular train was replaced by line 2 of the subway system.

the estrada de ferro leopoldina was originally owned by a minas gerais based company, though upon their bankruptcy the railroad was sold to a british-owned railway company.

known as the leopoldina railroad, it stretched from the neighborhoods of bonsucesso, ramos, olaria, penha, bras de pina, cordovil, parada de lucas, vigário geral, as far as duque de caxias and entered into a series of other suburbs in the baixada fluminense - north of rio.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
