at a glance

safely and ecologically transporting over six hundred thousand visitors a year to the spectacular christ the redeemer, is rio de janeiro's train of corcovado - older than the statue itself, the modern train of corcovado was build over a hundred years ago, making it the oldest tourist excursion in the country.

the line was opened in 1884, and inaugurated by brazilian emperor dom pedro ii in october of that year - originally built as a steam train, it was converted to electricity in 1910, the first of its kind in brazil.

soon after, it was used for four consecutive years to carry parts to the christ monument, thus playing a major role in the construction of the statue - it is renowned as a 'centenarian eco-friendly train', as it doesn't pollute and delicately cuts through the well-preserved atlantic forest, which is part of tijuca's national park.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
