at a glance
the santa teresa tram is the last proper tram service in operation throughout the whole of south america, running non stop since 1877 with electricity replacing horse power in 1891.

it is easy to see why the tram is so popular with visitors,  in fact as it leaves downtown rio and heads into santa teresa it travels all the way to the top of the hill, providing stunning views of the city below, including the metropolitan cathedral, and the lapa's arches - artists and writers where always inspired by the narrow, curvy, and cobblestoned roads were the tram rides, all the way into rua almirante alexandrino, the oldest in the neighborhood.

declared historical patrimony of the city, these trams are the only ones still functioning in brazil - taking the bondinho is more than plain transport, it is also a fun ride through history.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
