corcovado was eventually chosen for its elevation and position, and heitor da silva costa was given the role of designing the monument.   a native of rio de janeiro, and a a professor at the escola politécnica da ufrj, da silva costa travelled to europe to gain inspiration for his design.    

interestingly, a number of designers put forth their ideas before da silva costa was chosen, including a christ statue holding a globe and a crucified christ.
