bats and other animals in the surrounding, above-ground environment also use the caves as shelter in different periods of their life cycle. spelunking clubs meet in the park to explore caves as a group and visitors often hire guides to take them through the caves as well.

there are several groups that have created pages on facebook and the social media site is a way for cave explorers to connect and get together for spelunking trips.  

the tijuca cave trail is moderately difficult due to several areas where hikers must climb over stones and tree roots.
