the lagoon, as well as other parts of the municipality, is listed as an area of environmental protection, as a result of decree no. 7,230 of april 23, 1984, which prohibits certain behaviors around the lagoon, in an attempt to protect its delicate ecosystems. however, the area does experience a certain level of pollution, with rubbish often found in the lagoon, along with dirty water.

one of the larger lagoons in the região dos lagos, the lagoa de saquarema continues along the eastern passage of the atlantic coast, with an incredible area of 24 kilometers squared, as it hems the sea. the lagoon is made up of four distinct compartments, or pools, which are entitled fora, boqueirão, jardim, and urussanga, running from east to west.
