located across the guanabara bay and east along the state coast from rio de janeiro, lagoa de maricá is one of the main attractions of the municipality of maricá. a quiet town with beautiful, old, traditional sights, maricá is a peaceful retreat, where local populations appreciate their serenity.

the lagoon, as well as other parts of the municipality, is listed as an area of environmental protection, as a result of decree no. 7,230 of april 23, 1984, which prohibits certain behaviors around the lagoon, in an attempt to protect its delicate ecosystems. however, the area does suffer from a certain level of pollution, with rubbish often found in the lagoon, along with dirty water.
