slightly further inland than some of the other lagoons of the region, the alluring lagoa feia is the second largest freshwater lagoon, in brazil, fed by many of the rivers and streams that cascade down from the surrounding mountains. a

lthough one of the most beautiful lagoons in the region, the name translates as the 'ugly lagoon', and was so named, on the day of its discovery, because storms interrupted the waters usual tranquility, and the explores became spooked by the waves on the water.

it is located north east of the city of rio de janeiro, along the vibrant atlantic coastline, with its borders encroaching on the municipalities of goytacazes and quissamã. not far from the sea, or the nearby cities, there is a dynamic tourist infrastructure in the surrounding area, with many restaurants and bars, as well as a campsite, open to the public.
