the first ballet school and professional company in brazil was founded in rio de janeiro in 1927 by russian prima ballerina maria olenewa, who when dancing for the first time at the theatro municipal, got the idea and initiated with the creation of the corpo de baile do teatro municipal (corps de ballet of the municipal theater) - school was later renamed the escola de dança artes e técnicas do theatro municipal maria olenewa in order to honor olenewa and also to include the technical programs the school offers.
