at a glance
classical music arrived to rio de janeiro during the colonization of portugal as well as the reign of john vi of portugal, seeing as at the time the marvelous city was the capital of the then state of brazil - it was mainly introduced through the catholic church, brotherhoods and catechesis.

with the arrival of the king, classical music was seen more frequently, and national composers were born, with the first brazilian composer being the priest josé maurício nunes garcia, who initiated his career when he entered the priesthood and carried on in the brotherhood of saint cecilia.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
