pagode was not originally a genre but actually the name of parties hosted by freed-slaves - ultimately it became a synonym to any event involving singing and dancing, filled with joy and happiness - pagode became an official musical genre when pioneers began to create distinctive musical hits that were, at the time, unique to the carioca ear.
