itaipú beach is in the south zone of niterói facing out into the atlantic ocean. some of the city's more famous natural landmarks are adjacent to it, including morro das andorinhas and the pai, mãe, e filha islands (islands of the father, mother, and daughter). it is bordered on the inland side by an eponymous, mostly residential neighborhood. the region stretching from piratininga in the west to itacoatiara in the east - which includes itaipú - contains the cleanest beaches in niterói, both because of the constantly self-renewing oceanic waters, as opposed to the more stagnant waters in guanabara bay, and its position relative to several state environmental protection areas.
