One of the more historic and reputable establishments of its kind, Roxy is the only cinema in operation in the neighborhood of copacabana, and is recognized by residents and enthusiasts to be the 'frame of reference for the city's film culture'.

Having been active since 1938, it has continually defied the trend towards cinema closures across the city, retaining its original charm and ambience despite a number of renovations.

It is situated on the corner where the buzzing Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana meets Rua Bolivar, and attracts a great breadth of visitors, who migrate from chic and eclectic restaurants, bars, beaches and apartments in the region.

Originally Roxy contained just one screening room, but as this became over-populated, two more were constructed in the 1990s, with the capacity for 304, 306 and 309 people respectively - In spite of increased seating, the cinema continues to generate huge queues and showings are regularly sold out.
