at a glance
bossa nova, the rhythms that radicalized and reinvigorated the world of music, was born and raised on Rio's shores, to Joăo Gilberto, Tom Jobim and Carlos Lyra, to name a few.

Big and small samba shows populate the bars, clubs, theatres and streets of Rio throughout the year, while baile funk events are more commonly hosted in the favelas and communities that pepper the hills of the city.

In recognition of the seminal role music plays in cariocas' life, the government funds and hosts a wide range of free, open air events across the city, most notably the New Year's performances that take place at copacabana beach.

In recognition and reverence of its rich musical history and heritage, Rio is also the focal point for international musical events.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
