at a glance | On the 1st of March Cariocas joyfully reflect upon the inception of their city in 1565 - This seminal historic date marks a point in which the French and Portuguese were fighting for dominance in the area - after the Portuguese managed to successfully expel the French, the former created a highly fortified settlement of Church, trenches and houses. They named the city São Sebastião de Rio de Janeiro - Interestingly, it was named the 'River of January' because on first arrival the Portuguese confused guanabara bay for the mouth of a River. March 1st 2015 had an even greater significance, as it fell upon the city's 450th year of existence - Great effort, time and commitment were invested in the creation of an array of events and activities to encourage awareness, pride and fruitful interaction with the wonderfully unique city. | january | |||
