september 21st is the international day of peace and it is commemorated in rio with vigils, readings, and other cultural events especially in districts such as lapa and santa teresa.

created by the united nations in 1981, the Dia Internacional da Paz aims at sensitizing people to the need for peace in the world, and promoting acts to help end conflicts, no matter how small.

on this day everyone is asked to do something, however small,  to contribute to world peace, from lighting a candle to simply meditate.
