The Teatro Municipal, or 'Municipal Theatre', is one of the most striking buildings in the city - Built in the baroque style in Cinelandia in 1909, it primarily exhibits classical concerts, operas and ballets, as well as some musical theatre - In January 2015 it hosted Glauco Fernandez's theatrical concert rendition of 'The Little Prince' which enjoyed great critical acclaim.

Teatro Poeira, based in botafogo, offers a fine program every year - The drama 'O Branco do seus Olhos', for instance, took the stage early in 2015 and received a very warm critical reception. The theatre also functions as a space for those who wish to study and exchange ideas relating to theatre, in the pursuit of which it runs study and research programs as well as discussion meetings.

The OI Institute has also set up two theatres in flamengo and ipanema which regularly run a wealth of different artistic performances, providing an extensive program of theatre for children.

Near the majestic Jockey Club, in rua mário ribeiro, nº 410 - gávea, Rio's City Hall maintains the teatro municipal do jockey - centro municipal de referência do teatro infantil, a space primarily dedicated to children's plays, but also dedicated to stimulate the artistic formation of kids and teenagers by putting this public in contact with innovative scenic experiences dedicated for the youth of Rio - Also in the Theatre's building resides the Pedro Domingues library, with children's books for them to exercise reading before watching the plays.
