until the eighteenth century, the region was inhabited by indios, runaway slaves, and by colonialists trading with rio and nearby minas gerais.

from the nineteenth century, the city became populated by the european owners of farms and plantations of the region.

teresópolis became famous in the early ninetieth century, when the british horse breeder and businessman george march started bringing upper class friends and visitors from rio de janeiro for the summer.
